Just at noontime today, I was in City Center running late for a
lunch meeting at LaSalle Plaza, so I took a shortcut through the alley
between Dayton's and Shinder's. As I was tromping past the dumpsters and
through the muck, a nice sedan entered the alley's other end, and drove
slowly toward me. As the car and I passed each other, it slowed to a stop,
and I heard a voice behind me yell, "Hey, Brian!" Out of the backseat
window popped the head of . . . Mayor Rybak, craning sideways so that he
could check out the buildings in the alley. I said hello, and he cheerfully
explained, "We've already started making notes!" I wasn't exactly sure what
the project was but I figure that, if checking out that old alley is the
Mayor's idea of a fun way to spend his lunch hour, I am glad that he's on
the job.
I love living here.
