This is a rant, 'cause I've got my knickers in a twist.
Ken Avidor's notion that the proper transportation to the
library is a bus doesn't hold true for a part of the
population comprised of lots of library patrons.
"Walking a few blocks" is not what's happening. I go to the
downtown library to do in-library research. For circulating
books, I can get those at any branch.
I carry my research materials, any books to be returned, and
a tank of oxygen named Buddy. The more blocks I have to
walk, the less likely I can do it, particularly with books,
Buddy, and papers. If there is no parking at the downtown
library, it cuts me off from a part of my life. If the
"proper" mode of arrival is a bus, you might as well ask me
to star with the Royal Ballet next week.
I go downtown to the library in my van often. I don't often
go in. That's because the lot is full. The lot is also a
pain in the tookus for doing research or going to meetings
since you have to run out and plug the meter every little
whip-stitch.
Since C. Pelli's team member told me that I'm the "target
audience" (go the library at least twice a week--he didn't
quite grasp that I work there), then parking is the need
they have to meet to get me there.
