The subject line on this post is taken from some apt
graffitti on a bus shelter ad paid for by the
Minneapolis Public Police Department. The ad features
four men of color and tells the viewer if they want to
know what a bait car is just ask one of the four guys
pictured. These four individuals are supposed to be
representative of car thieves(are actually car
thieves?).

The placement of this ad(on the bus shelter in front
of the Orpheum) causes me to question at whom the ad
is aimed. Is the ad targeted at potential car
thieves? Is the ad to reassure suburbanites(who
already have an unrealistic fear of downtown) that the
police are taking action to prevent auto theft?

One thing the ad certainly accomplishes is reinforcing
the highly unrealistic fears of suburban and rural
Minnesotans visiting downtown all while reinforcing
rascist stereotypes. Certainly there are better ways
to make the public aware of the bait car program. Who
ever approved this expenditure couldn't be given a
pink slip too soon-IMHO.

Thanks,
