Bishop Thomas Gumbleton to speak in Minneapolis today per MN anti-war committee listerve.
Thanks, David Strand Many people oppose the war in Afghanistan but don't see an alternative. On Wed., February 6, there will be a rare opportunity to hear about peaceful options from one of the great peacemakers and prophets of our time. Bishop Thomas Gumbleton will speak at The Basilica of Saint Mary on Wednesday, February 6 at 7pm. His topic is Peace, Patriotism, & Non-Violence: Another Way to Confront Terrorism. Bishop Gumbleton, a pastor of St. Leo's Parish in Detroit for the past 19 years, has long been a voice for social justice. In 1983, he was a member of the Bishops' Committee that drafted the peace pastoral "Challenge of Peace. He was the founding President of Pax Christi USA from 1972-1991 and served as President of Bread for the World from 1976-84. He has received several honorary degrees and 25 peace awards including the Pax Christi Peacemaker Award, Alliance for Nuclear Accountability Award, and National Peace Foundation Award in Washington, DC. The Bishop is widely traveled in his tireless quest to build a more peaceful and just world. His many visits to Central America, especially El Salvador both during and after the war, have made him a valued and powerful voice for the poor who continue to struggle for their basic human rights. Since 1997, he has participated in 5 peace delegations to Iraq and has spoken out strongly against the economic sanctions that have taken so many innocent lives. Recent travels have taken him to Peru to seek the release of Lori Berenson, an American imprisoned in Peru, and to Colombia twice as part of Colombia Support Network delegations. Other peace missions include visits to Vietnam, Jordan, Haiti, and Chiapas. In the Bishop's countless national and international speaking engagements and actions of civil disobedience, Bishop Gumbleton has been an unwavering voice for justice and non-violence. He recently opposed the US Catholic Bishops' statement the supported the military assault on Afghanistan as a just war. The event is sponsored by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, Office for Social Justice-Archdiocese of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and the St. Paul Area Council of Churches. We feel very privileged to have this gifted speaker coming to The Basilica of Saint Mary. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo!
