For those who may not have seen the reports aired on WCCO the last few days, the Council Committee on Claims voted unanimously yesterday to reverse the decision of the Minneapolis Claims Committee and grant payment to Sandra Meyer for the medical bills associated with the care of her family's dog, Charger, who was shot by Minneapolis Police last August. The committee members are Dean Zimmerman (Chair), Lisa Goodman, and Paul Zerby.
In explaining the reasons for their votes, the committee members, in each their own way, cited mainly variations on the theme of excessive force. CM's Goodman and Zerby also mentioned far greater averse consequences in the future if the Meyer's claim were again to be denied. Animal lovers, if you need a bit of inspiration over the weekend and are near a TV, I'd give four stars to viewing the Claims hearing on cable and listening to what Council Members said. It was extremely reassuring given the questions surrounding police use of force in Minneapolis over the last several years. I'm feeling a lot better today about the safety of people's pets in our town and leadership on the issue from City Hall.
