For the record, MCDA staff did NOT accept Basim's bid. MCDA staff
recommended
the highest bidder, who owned a successful Asian restaurant, and wanted an
additional location at 4th and Lake - owner occupied small business, vs
absentee
 landlord.

MCDA staff did not recommend the building be sold to Basim. Rather, the CD
committee, made up of council members, voted to sell the building to Basim,
the
second highest bidder. Why? Council Member Niland made the motion, and said
"In deference to the wishes of Council Member Herron, I move that the
building
be sold to Basim Sabri". That is in the minutes, and was widely reported by
KSTP last summer. One can only speculate about the motives.

Keith says; Well, now we know the quid pro quo medium, cash.
I would like Mr.Piehl and others to consider discarding the word
"absentee" in describing those property owners who do not live or work in
their buildings. There is no positive application of the word "absent". The
term Absentee Landlord is used like spit. Absent means not being where you
belong. I suggest that "absent" is not appropriate or fair for most owners of
property who do not reside or "operate" within a structure they may own. Our
society has demonstrated a huge need and desire for rental property of all
types; the busy and sincere people who fill that niche are not absent
anything. Dictionary- "lacking, not attentive, to keep away" ( not positive
stuff).
Keith, NearNorth, I preserve the buildings folks did not care about in
the past
