Those of you who knew me in my younger days may recall that street names are an interest of mine. The proposal by Randy Kelly, mayor of the lesser twin, to rename that city's Cedar St. to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. is getting prominent attention. This raises the question of why the cumbersome name? There is no Father Louis Hennepin Ave. or President George Washington St.
Several streets in Minneapolis (albeit short ones) also follow this pattern: Kirby Puckett Pl., Cecil Newman Ln., Norm McGrew Pl.; however, it is Carew Dr. rather than Rod Carew Dr. IMHO the St. Paul proposal would be less contentious if they changed Cedar to King St. short and simple. One more thing: a block of former Stinson Blvd. was changed to Avionics Blvd. at the request of Honeywell in 1977 when Stinson was rerouted around their factory. Given the world situation, maybe it would be a good idea to change the name again so as not to advertise the plant to our enemies. Tony Hill Maj. Gen.
