The Guthrie wants a "theater factory", and that is
what they're getting. I've heard the architect say
that it was the Guthrie that wanted the scene shops on
top of the parking structure. Nouvel had initial
thoughts on the design which were rejected by Guthrie
management for functional and economic reasons. So,
like Orchestra Hall, we're getting another attempt at
culture from a warehouse. (my first thoughts)

On first blush, the model didn't excite me, but on
subsequent looks it seems very logical to have this
building as a natural progression from the decades of
industrial uses at the site. I like the smokestack
like electronic signs and the orange lobby jutting out
from the highest theater, it will glow in the
evenings. The coloring fits with the nearby
structures but will stand out from afar.

No, its not Milwaukee's wings inspired new art museum
and it's not the Sydney Opera House. It is a
reflection of why this city exists in the first place.
None of us would be here without the falls which
brought the sawmills which became the flour mills,
we'd be in St. Paul, (perish the thought). I do hope
the remainder of the site that is not being used will
become green space.

Finally, somebody get Jean Nouvel on "Almanac" or
"Midmorning" or heck, even "Lunch with the Governor".
The guy seemed quite the character at the Guthrie's
Friday Q&A. If anything, his imposing presence would
scare some legislators into voting yes.
