For fun and to spur discussion, I've created a "redistricting geek" website where you can view some theoretical plans that conform to the city's basic legal requirements (contiguous wards and within 5% of the average ward population).
The plans are meant as suggestions - the start of discussion and hopefully refinement! I hope if you get a sense of what can be done, hopefully you'll have a better idea of what should be done. I tried two basic concepts: keeping wards the same within (homogeneous) and making them more diverse by income and race (heterogeneous). The basic goal I established was trying to avoid neighborhoods split between 2 or more wards. This might not be your goal - but I wanted to see if it could be done within the rules and logic. The answer is, yes, many different ways! The wards were all drawn without regard to partisan benefit or where incumbents live (since I only know where 2 council members live, I'll be curious who I threw together!) Feedback welcomed and encouraged - send it to me, or to the list if you think it worthy. I'll post comments to the site The Geek site is at: http://members.tcq.net/david/index.htm Thanks, David Brauer King Field - Ward 10 (for now) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
