While I agree in general with Lisa Goodman's arguments
regarding the proposed tax levies for the new ballpark,
I have to disagree with her on a couple of points.
First of all, the extra tax on restaurant food in
Minneapolis doesn't drive me to the suburbs to get my
gutbombs and barbeque. When I was temping at the Drexel,
I used to eat at the Band Box because it was convenient,
which is the same reason I occasionnally eat at Peter's
Grill downtown these days. If people are fleeing downtown for restaurants on the Strip
or St. Paul on
account of the difference in sales tax, I suspect that
they're probably too cheap to eat out in the first place
or that they're too stupid to realize that they're
avoiding the tax only by virtue of spending more money on gas for their car.
On the other tentacle, the reason there aren't more
regular eateries open downtown after office hours is
that the customers aren't there to support them. That's
it, pure and simple. Bars, sure. High-end restaurants
catering to traveling businessmen, absolutely. Places
that don't cost $20 a plate and taste like the oregano was left out - get thee to Eat
Street!
