Vicky Heller quotes an IRS number of 1.2 million tax-exempt organizations
in the country. Not all tax-exempt organizations are charitable. Some
types of tax-exempt organizations are social and sports clubs. This is
so that dues and other income related to the purpose are not taxed, they
still pay sales tax, gas tax, etc.

Examples:

Minnesota Soaring Club (flying gliders)

Minnesota SAAB Club (enjoying owning and driving SAAB cars)

Ramsey County Garden Club (I don't know this one for sure, but I expect that
it is tax-exempt)

Other possibilities: quilting clubs, dog owners clubs, skiing clubs, skating
clubs...

I have no idea as to the numbers, but the IRS can probably break the count
down by which section of the Internal Revenue Code the organizations fall
under. This is not to say that charitable organizations are a small portion
of the total.
