The recent vote to override the Governor's veto in
the Legislature is problematic for several reasons.
The most important of which is that the Legislature
provided no way for the state to increase it's
decreasing revenue. This will affect Minneapolis
profoundly in future years to come, and could force
Minneapolis to spend where the state has traditionally
helped.
The Governor's solution is also problematic,
but at least it attempts to provide a long-term
solution to the most serious economic crisis in a
generation without depleting our reserves. The
Legislature's action amounts to a law the prolongs the
recession and could result in the loss of jobs and a
much lower living standard in Minneapolis. Its real
aim seems to be to protect the DFL/Republican systems
and ensure that no economic relief will come from a
Third Party Governor.
This philosophy was clear at recent forum when
Roger Moe stated that Ventura's gas tax was too
extreme, and later claimed to support a gas tax. One
can only assume that his real agenda is to only help
the economy once he is elected governor.
That said, we still face challenges in
addressing transportation, health care, education,
public safety, and the environment. With the current
Legislature committed to playing partisan politics to
benefit the agendas of the DFL and Republican parties
and less concerned about providing good legislation
for the people in Minnesota (and Minneapolis,) I'm
proud to declare my intent to pursue the Minnesota
State senate Seat for what is now District 61, because
it's time for some action in the Minnesota State
Legislature, and I hope to be a part of that.
