I really got a kick out the SPPP article. One person at the Park Board
hearing was quoted as saying that she "didn't want to get stressed walking
around the lake and seeing DQ" The article didn't state whether she got
stressed when she sees walkers and joggers wearing corporate icons on their
shirts. Another resident of East Harriet Pkwy complained he didn't want a
DQ in his front yard!! I know those who live on the lake sometimes act as
though they own it, but really, a store approximately 1 mile away is in your
front yard!?!

It's issues like this that give Minneapolis its reputation as somewhat
goofy. Nowhere did I read in their proposal that DQ was going to afix a
spinning malt cup on the refectory or have an illuminated pylon sign to
attract passersby from Lake Street or 50th Street. I did see however that
DQ had given the Park Board a proposal whereby instead of the PB losing
$125,000 it would gain approximately $200,000. That's $325,000 a year that
would go support the Park Board -- money that is desparately needed and
isn't there today. Furthermore to all you concerned about local venders
getting in on the action, the PB did solicit proposals from Dunn Bros.,
Caribou and Brueggers.

I agree the PB needs to figure out why its losing money at the refectories
(one guess is that $1.25 for two pretty big scoops, they're not making a lot
on ice cream sales). And it should be understood that any refectory vender
will not be allowed "inappropriate signage, napkins, wrappers, etc." But
the DQ deal was probably a pretty sweet deal for the City (pun intended).

If Dunn Bros, or Sebastion Joes, or Sonny's, or the Lyndale Youth farmers
can do it better and cheaper than DQ, more power to them. Give the PB a
proposal. The opening is there, let's see what you got.
