Hello All--
I wanted to say a couple of things to follow up with the Youth Sports Posts. And also, thanks for Dennis for a great summary.
I also want to clarify that these are my opinions, not that of my official working with Hennepin County and the Youth Coordinating Board.
I think it is fantastic that someone, ie the YCB, is concerned about Youth Recreation. Hiring Mac Boston to take a look at the situation and offer recomendations has brought the issue to everybodys mind, especially with the schools and their budget cuts.
One things that grates on me personally is that everyone is so concerned about sports, and not, as Dennis mentioned, the arts and other extra-cirriculars.
Sports are necessary, several students are involved, but there are so many other things that students are involved in that are maybe not as visible, but still are great. Examples of this could be an all school musical or play, band, pep band, marching band, orchestra, choir, peer mediation groups, debate, speech, Studetns Against Drunk Driving, etc. These are all valuable programs, I am sure in danger of being cut, and have no plan to save them. I would like to see the Youth Sports discussion that Dennis mentioned to be including all of Youth Recreation, including the arts and extra cirriculars, that make just as much of a difference in a students life.
