Those of you who are passionate about reducing fossil fuel dependency and who are concerned about the voracious appetite cars have for fuel and land (to say nothing of fatal accidents), check out http://www.taxi2000.com/. Taxi2000 is a sustainable rapid transit system that has the potential for moving beyond use of fossil fuels. It seems to me the best alternative for folks who cannot bike or walk. One three-foot rail can accommodate three freeway lanes of traffic. (Think of it! Highway 35W reduced to a rail three feet wide...and since it is elevated, gardens could be growing where the asphalt was---)It's a spectacular solution for inner city neighborhoods. LRT is a dated, lugubrious, and oooooooh so expensive technology. Had we put Taxi2000 along Hiawatha, we would be the sustainability capital of the world. DANG---missed our chance!
Taxi2000 is homegrown at the U of Mn...by a local genius...Dr Ed Anderson. I would most welcome & appreciate a factual conversation with someone who OPPOSES the Taxi2000 system, and who would like to get down to specifics. I cannot find such a person...yet, last I heard, the Met Council & Transportation Depts. do not support it. Our well-intended champion of LRT Mr. P. McLaughlin is woefully uninformed about Taxi2000. I feel so dejected when our leaders make major financial decisions based on misinformation or no information. Do I get kicked off the list for being a klutz? Oh, and can one cancel messages once they have been sent? I am the sort of person who burns her fingers and singes her hair trying to get the cigarette to light. It's the real reason I gave up smoking.
