For several months now I have noticed that my water bill is more then my electric bill. I understand all of the little charges but I'm talking about the water and sewer costs. It is safe to say that our water bill is now a legitimate utility. I once had to make a payment arrangement with the water department that I was unable to keep. They would not accept another arrangement from me for three years. Once water is cut off in a home it is my understanding that it is only a matter of days before the home is closed up and the family moved out. I know that the city council has power and authority over the water department. If they are committed to affordable housing why not look to lower that which you have control over. It is hard for me to believe that it cost the city just as much to produce and deliver water as it does to deliver electricity. How about that water test fee of . 48? Boy I bet that adds up fast. Is the water department just making its way financially? Or is it a profitable business for the city as is the electric and gas companies for their owners? If there is a profit margin, can the council cut it to make housing more affordable for everyone. Water is a necessity, should it not be provided to the citizens of the city as such.
I may be just sounding off, but can anyone tell me where to get the numbers on the water department? It would be nice to understand why we are receiving such large bills. Mine is around $97 per month for water and sewer. No, my toilet does not run. No, I do not have a leak. Point is affordable housing is about much more then rent or house payments. It is also about inflamed utility cost, high insurance cost, and taxes that are out of control. Oh yes, my taxes were increased by 25% this year. If we do not look into lowering these other housing costs, building more rental units and mixed income housing is like farting in the wind.
