I have to say that as a downtown resident who is autofree by choice I welcome more Hollywood options in the city. If I go see a film,(less than once a week-I prefer live theater/dance) it is usually at the Uptown/Lagoon, Univeristy Film Society, Oak St. Cinema or Saint Anthony Main theaters. These theaters are the most accessible and only St. Anthony Main offers mainstream fair. Many mainstream films never show in the city limits. > That, and voting with your dollars. I enjoy documentary and find an occassional screening of interest at the Walker Art Center, Intermedia Arts, Oak St. Cinema or U Film Society. As far as Asian film, Asian Media Access' offerings are interesting often at the Riverview(3800 42nd Ave. S) I loved the midnight weekend series presenting the history of hong kong martial arts films a couple of years ago. If Bollywood is more your bag, check listings at Oak St. Cinema which is now regularly offering films from India.
I think the must underserved and commerciably viable film audience for the Skyway would be the growing hispanic community that still enjoys films in spanish for the whole family. In addition to offering commercial family fair(think Ciento y Un Dalmatas) in spanish it could also offer less commercial fair with english subtitles to draw on the art cinema crowd. Most major american films are released in spanish as well as english. I think many families would come downtown from across the state for the opportunity to see films(yes, even Hollywood fare) in spanish. I also think many art film fans would come. I know my brother met his British girlfriend in Barcelona when he vacationed there to view the premier screening of "All About My Mother". There are many fans of Spanish cinema and most latin american cinema doesn't get much showing here. Imagine the front of the Skyway dressed up like a glittery pinata with a mural depicting scenes from/of films done in shiny glittery material like that outside Chino Latino. Imagine the smell of cinnamon, fried plantanos, and other treats wafting out onto the street. If advertised in the burgeoning hispanic press around the state, I have no doubt it would be a hit. Let's bring and welcome more diversity downtown! Just musing on the possibilities, David Strand -Loring Park __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
