We need a strong contingent of Minneapolis residents for this event!

'Clean Energy Now', a coalition of local environmental groups including
West Side Citizens' Organization Environment Committee, Southeast Como
Improvement Association, Mississippi Corridor Neighborhood Coalition, Clean
Water Action, the Sierra Club Air Toxics Campaign, and others, announces the
launch of our lawn sign campaign.
>
> When: Saturday, April 13th 11 am
> Where: Harriet Island, St. Paul
>
> There will be refreshments, live music, speakers, and of course, lawn
signs.
> The message on the sign says "Clean Energy Now" with a picture of smoke
> stacks with an 'X' through them, with a number in St. Paul and Minneapolis
> for contact information. Fact sheets on the 4 Xcel owned coal burning
power
> plants (High Bridge in St. Paul, Riverside in Minneapolis, King in
> Stillwater, and Black Dog in Burnsville) will be available. We are asking
> for a $2 or more donation for the signs, but no one will be left signless
> due to inability to pay.
>
> The 'Clean Energy Now' coalition advocates as an interim policy, the
> repowering of the metro area coal burning plants to natural gas, or at
> minimum, the installation of BACT (best available control technology).
For
> the longer term, we advocate for the development and use of clean
renewables like wind and solar power.
>
> The lawn sign campaign evolved to raise awareness of the public and the
> decision-makers to the environmental and health dangers of coal burning.
> With the help of Representative Mariani, we have introduced 4 pollutant
> legislation to limit the emissions of sulphur dioxide (generates
particulate
> matter), nitrogen oxide (causes smog), carbon dioxide (causes global
> warming), and mercury (causes neurological damage).
>
> A few facts:
>
> 75% of Minnesota's electricity comes from coal, compared to 50% in the
U.S.
> as a whole.
>
> Requiring these grandfathered coal plants to meet modern emission
standards
> for nitrogen oxides would have the same impact as removing two-thirds of
the
> cars registered in Minnesota.
>
> According to the MPCA, the air quality in the Twin Cities last summer was
> smoggier than at any time since the 1970s.
>
> Invited speakers include: Senators Wellstone and Dayton, Rep. McCollum,
> Mayors R.T.Ryback and Kelly, the City Councils of Minneapolis and St.
Paul,
> State Representatives including Mariani, Wagenius and others.
