I'm going to preface my comments by stating that I am only 19 years old so my
opinions on this subject are produced by only 3 years of legal driving.
As a common "rule" of the road when driving, we are always on the alert for
police officers. Whether we're doing something illegal or not in our
vehicles, there is always the constant reminder in the back of our minds that
what if there is a trooper hidden beneath that freeway bridge or around the
next corner? And when the dreaded MPD car comes into vision, we become tense
and suddenly very sane and reasonably safe drivers on our busy city streets
and highways. We come to a full stop at a stop sign and always use our
signal lights. These are normal things that we take for granted especially
when not following a police officer. However, do these rules apply to police
officers? That is the common question that always comes into my mind when I
find myself keeping a constant 80 MPH with a trooper or if I see an officer
take an illegal u-turn. Their lights were not on nor did they appear to be
on their way to an emergency, so why do they get away with this? This age
old question probably can be answered that they obviously can't pull
themselves over. And they are police officers so why not bend a rule or two
because, to sum it up, they just can. No matter how unfair or dangerous
these actions can be for normal drivers, it always comes down to the
policeman of our city can and they will no matter how bad of an example they
display.
