For the Met Council to be serious about wanting to increase the supply of
all housing and affordable housing, they would have to do a 180 degree turn.

1. Expand the MUSA Line. Not hold it in place. The current policy is
driving the cost of housing inside the Musa line to stratospheric heights.
This is good for those who already own, but bad for all others.

2. Met should quit dictating to suburban officials as to what to build.
Suburban developers and the suburban govt's will always want to spit the
bit. It slows down all development when the Met puts obstacles in the way.

3. Those involved with housing please weigh in here. I am sure to get the
standard Met Council/New urbanist responses. They do not build own or
manage. Let's hear from people who actually are involved in risking their
own resources in the housing business. Not those who spend other people's
(re: taxpayers) money.

Last week the Metropolitan Council raised its definition of housing
affordability from $134,000 to $170,000. This was an administrative change
that reflects steady increases in home prices and incomes. It should not be
misinterpreted as a shift in policy or the affordability standard for the
Council's housing grants.

The Metropolitan Council shares Kate Carey's concern about the folks hit
hardest by the housing crisis and is encouraging developers and communities
to build houses for less than $170,000. The Council's next step is to
retool its housing incentive programs, perhaps directing funds to
owner-occupied housing that serves families below 80% of the median income
or $61,360.

The entire Metropolitan Council is committed to increasing housing
production and affordability. Members George Garnett, Frank Hornstein and
Lee Pao Xiong champion the cause and welcome input from housing advocates.
