As far as I'm concerned, the recent actions of the MPD in the Dinkytown "riot" underscore a conclusion that I find increasingly inescapable:
The Minneapolis Police Department is completely out of control. Read David Brauer's recent article on the Critical Mass debacle. There's one very interesting line in there about rider who was assaulted by police being dropped off at HCMC to get stitches in his head and a splint for his arm. The police report claims that no force was used when the police cited this individual. The police spokesperson goes on to say that no police report indicated that riders were tackled by officers of the MPD. I was there. Riders were tackled by officers, unless we're dealing with a strange, otherworldly definition of the word "tackle." When civilians cannot trust police reports to be accurate, what are the police worth to us? How can we uphold the conviction of anyone in our city for any crime when the information gathered by our police officers cannot be trusted? When will our city have a police force that uses violence as the very last resort? When will we have a police force that actually protects the safety of our citizens? When will we have the police force we deserve? The answer is becoming clearer by the day: only when we stand up and demand it. Call your Council Member.
