Lisa Kugler says that my response was "vehement". I would say that's how I read her post. I suggested how hard it would be to revoke this policy that she seems to think harms the majority of the public.
As far as percentages, I see that the US census figure (fourth quarter 2001) for the US as a whole is 68.0%, and the figure for the midwest is 73.5%. If I remember my post correctly, I said 75%, so that's not far off for the Minneapolis area focus, but it is for the whole country - a 10% error. Across the country: Central cities - 52.2% Suburbs - 74.8% Outside metropolitan areas - 74.9% The suburbs are where the majority of the population lives nowadays, and that proportion will increase over time. I won't bother quoting surveys of how many people would prefer to own their own home, some wouldn't believe the sources. I didn't try to go back in history to the earliest dates of encouraging home ownership. Maybe someone would like to dig up homeownership figures from 1870?
