A week ago today my lady cardinal came home. She perched herself at the
very top of the oak tree on the boulevard and sang like the diva she is.
Yesterday I was at Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly retreat house
on Lake Josephine (I think that's Roseville, but...). I watched as the
wind, a gentle wind, pushed the ice north on the Lake. When I pulled in
on Friday night, the ice was out around the shore and the mush ice on
the rest of the lake lay there like a lump reflecting no light. At noon
Saturday, a crack opened about a third of the way South into the lake.
By 4:30, the wind had teased that crack until the ice was piling into
shore and melting and a huge piece of the lake was clear, while the West
and South shores of the lake had cleared the ice and sent it out to the
middle. At the same time the North center cleared. When I left, the ice
had lost the battle and it was only a matter of mopping up the debris.
