I've been birdwatching all winter. Because I live so close to the river, I've had robins all winter long, cardinals (one pair), spotted the first mourning doves and grackles two weeks ago, and I'm wondering where my Cooper's hawk went(!), but
What please, might I have seen flying overhead yesterday morning? It appeared the size of a very large potbellied goose, but didn't use its wings like a goose does. The wingspan was sort of short in relation to the bulk of the body, but it didn't flap as frantically as ducks need to Is there a swan flyover above Minneapolis? Or, what could the bird have been? AND when does anyone think the bald eagles might be moving up river, or am I too late? I shared a wonderful moment several years ago. Early in the morning I was driving on Oak Street toward East River Road and spotted a bald eagle above the river, just riding the thermals, possibly looking for the odd fish or two, but mostly just hacking around. I pulled over and watched for 10 minutes or so, just enraptured by the chance sighting. When the bird got bored or tired and flew away, I looked around and realized that the road was dotted with 7 or 8 cars, and we'd all stopped to watch. We exchanged smiles and nods, and got back in our vehicles and drove off.
