Ice leaves biggest metro lakes

Published Apr 17, 2002
A milepost in the march of seasons was reached Monday night and Tuesday
morning when winter's ice cleared out of two of the metro area's biggest
lakes.
Official ice-watchers declared White Bear Lake ice-free just before
midnight Monday and Lake Minnetonka clear at 2:34 a.m. Tuesday.
Despite the mild winter and late formation of ice, the clearing date is
about average. Records for White Bear Lake go back to 1928, while ice-out
for Minnetonka has been noted for most of the last 148 years.
Warmth and wind also blew the ice off Lakes Harriet and Calhoun in
Minneapolis on Sunday. April 14 was the same date their ice disappeared a
year ago, following a long and nasty winter. Medicine Lake also cleared
Sunday, followed by Lake Waconia and Forest Lake on Monday.
