The Minneapolis Board of Education will hold a public hearing at 6:00 PM
on Thursday, April 25, 2002 at the Banneker School Auditiorium, 3320
Elliot Avenue South, to hear public comment on the proposed "fresh
start"/closing of the Benjamin Banneker Community School at the end of
the 2001-2002 school year.

I think it is horrendous that this is happening so quickly without time
for real parent input from those involved and without looking at
alternatives. As many problems as Banneker has, many of the parents
want to keep it open as an elementary program. Some of this probably
relates to their ability to walk there for conferences or when their
kids miss the bus, other reasons probably have to do with keeping their
kids in the community where they know other parents. But the main issue
is how the decision gets made. Why does the school board feel they have
the right to just impose a closing on this community without their
input?
