Al Giesen writes regarding the proposed Dog Park underneath the Nicollet Ave
overpass on Minnehaha Creek:

>This is a poor site for a dog park. The area is dominated by 10 bridge
abutments each measuring 11' by 19'. Views are >substantially obstructed so
forget about keeping track of your dog.

>The obstruction of the view will also lead to this becoming the dirtiest of
parks because who will pick up their dog's >poop when they don't see the dog
poop?

>Park Board staff has acknowledged the potential public safety issues given
the bridge structure.

>Additionally, the rain runoff from the bridge is directed into this area
and the water ponds until it evaporates or soaks in. >Ahhh...nothing like
the smell of lots of wet dog poop.

>Access by car is poor and parking is very limited. A member of the Park
Board says that this is good because then this >will become a neighborhood
site that people will walk to.

OK, here I go once again, the Park Board has YET to establish a Dog Park on
the north side of Minneapolis. And no I don't count Columbia Park as a
northside park, no offense NE! What goes Park Board? I am forced to travel
to Lake of the Isles, Minnehaha Park, and Columbia Park to satisfy my dog's
urges to romp with other doggies. Why doesn't the Park Board cover the city
in all quadrants with dog parks FIRST and then consider dog parks in other
areas. I know many a northside resident who has to travel to dog parks
outside of our immediate neighborhood. Can we have some parity here? North
Minneapolis is bordered by our most beautiful and expansive park - Theodore
Wirth Park and yet no serious considerations as far as I know have been made
to set up a park north of I-394 and west of I-94. Wirth Park has good ample
parking near the Chalet and other areas, how about the archery area near the
Chalet at Plymouth and Theo Wirth Parkway???

Annie, thoughts? Can you forward my comments to Jon Olson my park
commissioner since the Park Board website doesn't list Jon as having an
email address listed?

Don't get me wrong, I love dog parks, but this is yet another obvious
example of the disparity between North and South Minneapolis.

Oh and I understand the Park Board is enforcing the license requirement for
dogs who use dog parks. Good for them. I have encountered many a unruly
dog WITHOUT a license and remind his/her owner that they should license
their dog.
