The Midtown Greenway is a publicly owned rail corridor running one block
north of Lake Street in Minneapolis. A portion of the corridor is depressed
below grade and there are 39 road bridges over the corridor. Phase I of the
Midtown Greenway recreational trail has been completed on the westerly half
of the corridor. Plans are to abandon rail service and remove the tracks
this summer. The southerly part of the corridor, where the tracks are now,
is being reserved for future transportation purposes.

This Saturday, April 27th, there will be a community Arbor Day planting
event along Phase I of the recreational trail. Volunteers will plant
approximately 125 trees and over 200 perennials, bushes and vines at the
below five sites:
the ramp down to Dean Boulevard
   between Emerson and Dupont Avenues
along the Bryant Avenue ramps down to the trail
   between Harriet and Grand Avenues
   between Aldrich and Lyndale Avenues

Tree Trust supervised maintenance crews will also plant trees between
Hennepin and Girard Avenues to gauge the difficulty and danger involved
with plantings on the Greenway slopes.

The event starts at 9:00 o'clock may last until noon. Volunteers can choose
between anyone of the five sites and should park near the site and walk
down to the corridor. The Twin Cities Tree Trust will provide shovels and
other equipment and there will be arborculturalists at each site to
supervise the planting work. There will be sandwiches, fruit and water to
drink and a good time should be had by all. Mayor Rybak, Representative
Martin Sabo and others will be speaking at the Aldrich - Lyndale site at
8:45 a. m.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast is for cool, inclement weather and
perhaps even snow. Based on their many years of experience, Tree Trust says
that this is one factor that does cause a low volunteer turn out.
Therefore, we are asking for your special consideration to volunteer to
help plant these plants. In the big bank in the sky, one sometimes makes
withdrawals and one sometimes makes deposits. Especially if the weather is
bad Saturday morning, this may be a good opportunity to make a deposit.
Bring warm clothes. It would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions
about the event, please contact Rebekah VanWieren at Tree Trust at
651-644-5800. Thanks.
