This post is in response to Annie Young who said that
new development in the Phillips neighborhood is
hurting poor people.

I have been hearing this argument about
"gentrification" more and more lately and i want to
stop it in its tracks.

You hear the same argument here in Northeast: "Why do
they have to build those condos here, pretty soon we
will have a Starbucks and NE Hennepin Ave will look
just like Edina."

This is a load of crap in my opinion. NE Hennepin was
a bunch of underutilized storefronts three years ago.
Now we have nice new stores paying nice new property
taxes and wages. How is this bad for the
neighborhood?

I agree that the suburbanization of Minneapolis is not
a good idea, but the argument that new mixed use
development somehow hurts poor people is really
short-sighted in my opinion.
