-----Original Message----- From: Tom Berthiaume @parallel-productions.com Mr.Luce does some rather nifty slight of hand with the census data in an attempt to deny the facts on the ground.
[T Brown] More accurately it might be said that Greg Luce isn't tempting to mold the facts to keep something out of his backyard. [Tom Berthiaume] So let's just measure it the way the law does, by 1/4 mile. Within 1/4 of 1920 LaSalle there is a population of approximately 1450 ... [T Brown] The law says nothing about population of an area. It also allows the Council to at its discretion issue permits. The permit was applied for and after the proper hearings was issued. The Not In My Back Yard folks (including Berthiaume) sued. Reminds me of the kid who gets mad and takes his ball and goes home. [Tom Berthiaume] The Kowalskis that is closing has nearly identical demographics ... [T Brown] The grocery store that is closing has been horribly maintained and is rather small. It would be very expensive to remake into the higher end grocery that Kowalskis is know for. [Tom Berthiaume] This discussion is not about "getting rid" of anyone, and it is unfair to say it is. [T Brown] That is exactly what this discussion is about. It is not very transparent. (and some people on this list think I AM the conservative) [Tom Berthiaume] While Mr. Luce seems comfortable with a 30% disabled population within a 1/4 radius, there probably is some point, (50%, 80%,100%?) at which he would agree it is bad public policy, bad for the disabled, and very discouraging to a future grocer. What number should we consider too low or too high? [T Brown] I find it frightening that anyone is attempting to keep a person out of a neighborhood because of a disability. What to many wheelchairs, to many white canes, to many people buying batteries for their hearing aids? The whole objection has changed over the period of the Lydia House debate and its becoming more and more clear that Berthiaume et al are objecting to those that don't look like they do.
