Powderhorn Park neighborhood is named, I am almost positive, after the park
of the same name. The park gets its name from Powderhorn Lake. The lake in
turn was named for its shape. You guessed it, it is (or was) shaped like an
old powderhorn for a musket (or some such firearm). If I remember correctly,
the lake was larger (and its shape more pronounced) before the construction
of 35W, which had a startling affect on the water flowing into the lake. The
lake has no natural source of water (spring, creek, rivulet, etc.) but
survives solely on water runoff. Neighbors are working feverishly (and at
times furiously) to clean up the lake water, which is the dirtiest in the
city.
