This is the case for the Hawthorne neighborhood. It was named after the Hawthorne school, which was located on N 6th St between 24th and 25th Avenues. The school was built in 1883 and was named after Nathaniel Hawthorne. The school was torn down in the 1970's and replaced with housing. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist born in Salem, Massachusetts. He wrote "The Scarlet Letter", which I read in my high school literature class. Incidently, Hawthorne was friends with Longfellow while they attended Bowdoin College in Maine.
