Senator Higgins: Thank you for letting me know that the Colin Powell Youth Center -- an Urban Ventures project is in the bonding bill. I just got off the phone with the Governor's office and told him about the organization, Urban Ventures and Art Erickson which is behind the Colin Powell Youth Center. Yes, it's a great name -- but a major boondoggle. Governor Ventura would be well advised to veto this. Call his office at: 651-296-3391.
Sen. Higgins writes about possible veto targets. >Also because he sees our projects as "local" and not of >statewide significance. The planetarium would be the only one >in the state, but HE sees it as local. The planetarium is a decent project. The empowerment zones. >Our other projects are nonprofits, which he hates: the Guthrie, >the Children's Theatre, Colin Powell Youth leadership Ctr, The Governor should veto this puppy -- the Colin Powell Youth Center - brought to you by Art Erickson of Urban Ventures. I'm curious, Linda, why you are supporting public funding for an obviously fundementalist christian faith based proposal. The Colin Powell Youth Center should be entirely privately funded. and >so on. I have a modest $375,000 project for People Inc.'s >Northside program, which serves homeless veterans and >others. This was a project originally passed 4 years ago. The >building they first wanted had underground drycleaner tanks, so >that one was unusable. Then building prices soared, and >options lessened. Anyway, 2 years ago, the house blocked my >modifications and this year they tried again. I finally got them to >agree to continue the funding, because People Inc. now has >found a terrific location and can proceed but needs the money. >Now the Gov has it in his sights. Linda, I would suggest you encourage the Governor to veto the Colin Powell center, and keep this pet project for you.
