Powderhorn Lake was once the shape of a powderhown. The pointy end of the horn was Filled in when the Park Board dredged the lake. I can't remember the date but maybe the late 1880's. There was great disdain for the fetid swamp where the athletic fields are now located. Wetlands were thought to be a great blight on the landscape and health hazards. Most of our city lakes were dredged to fill wetlands. 35 W was an ecological disaster that we hopefully can learn from. Theodore Wirth's book about the Parks is an incredible resource and fun to read. Powderhorn park had group sings that brought crowds that would rival the current May Day celebration. The Lake was also an Olympic skating rink.

Lake St. in 1905-1912 Thanks, Scott Vreeland Seward _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
