I used to live in India in the late 70's. It used to
get up to 126 degrees on a regular basis. It was way
too hot for this Norsky/Irish girl. I am sure global
warming hasn't helped the situation nor has the fact
that their population has reached over a billion
people.

In Minneapolis, it still gets below zero in the winter
and I am sure it will get blistering hot at some point
and time this summer.

I guess the old saying "think global, act local" is
the best thing we can do. Minneapolis has started by
disallowing phosphorus in lawn treatments. That is a
big success and one we should celebrate.

Neighborhoods have also helped by engaging in the
storm sewer stenciling programs, the clean-water cook
books, wet land, and native planting projects.

In addition, several neighborhoods have implemented
tree planting projects. I know Whittier planted 615
trees. Nokomis East planted trees to replace the ones
destroyed by the tornado in the late 90's, Longfellow
has done Oak Savannah restoration.

Longfellow is in process of implementing a Native
Plant Hydro Scaping program so homeowners can
landscape in a way that will reduce pollutants from
flowing into the storm water sewers.

Then there is the buckthorn removal folks. They are
diligent. Both Linden Hills and Prospect Park are
hunting it down and getting rid of it.

People are actively identifying and attempting to
eradicate the gypsy moths.

Midtown and East Phillips are working on making some
of the vacant lots into permanent community gardens
that will provide not only an environmental benefit
but great community building opportunities. In fact, I
believe one of the lots is next door to you Lynn.

Many people in this city use bikes as their main mode
of transportation.

There are so many other initiatives going on, I can't
even remember them all.

I think it's fair to say Minneapolis is definitely a
"green city". Many of our citizens actively engage in
activities to improve our environment and protect it
for future generations.

All of these people are to be commended.
