Actually, at the city's bicycle planning meeting last fall (winter? there was a LOT of
snow that day), we discussed this, and the hold-up is for the Light Rail transit
station. Depending on funding for the NorthStar commuter rail line, that may hold up
the completion of the Cedar Lake trail to the river, as well, since Minneapolis
doesn't want to put in the rest of the trail, only to have to tear it up about the
time people start using it, and then put it in yet again once the LRT station is
completed.

Currently, there are two routes from the Mississippi to the Cedar Lake Trail. Here are
my preferences:
Heading westbound, take River Road to 4th Ave N. West to 1st St. N. South to 3rd
Ave N. West to entrance to Cedar Lake Trail (if you hit Glenwood, the trail is to your
right).
Eastbound: Exit Cedar Lake Trail. Take Glenwood 1 block East.
a - Take 10th St N southbound to Hennepin Ave. Eastbound to river, making ugly
transition from bike-lane to sidewalk or right side of road sometime near Washington
Ave. This is my preferred route.
b - Continue on 2nd Ave N. eastbound until you get frustrated with traffic,
blind corners, and stoplights that are against you at every corner and just head over
to Hennepin via 6th St. N.
c - During business days, another eastbound alternative is to continue on 2nd,
cross 394 at 7th(? I think it's 7th), head 1/2 block east on 3rd Ave N (wrong-way) and
then head down into the RR trench, which is full of parking lots. On a bike, you can
ride (if all the gates are open) all the way to Washington Avenue through the parking
lots, which are relatively flat. This only works on business days.

Westbound works pretty well. Eastbound is a mess, whether you attempt to take 2nd or
Hennepin, since in both cases, the bike lane abruptly ends well short of the river,
leaving you in the middle of the street, wondering how to proceed.
