After sharing the story about the tragic death of Raj with my sister-in-law, she told me about the day two dogs went through the ice in the river. Their owners, in a panic, went running out onto the river ice after their dogs and they too went through the ice. Fortunately, quick thinking folks on shore brought all four back to safety. Minutes later, while everyone was recovering from the frenzy, my sister-in-law's dog, Eddie, ran out onto the ice and fell into the river. One of the wet guys from the first rescue volunteered to rescue Eddie, thank goodness. I hate to think of how many dogs have been lost to the river during winter (anyone know?). So let's ask the park board to not only install safety fencing along the cliff, but also consider barrier fencing along the riverfront during the winter months.
