The Minneapolis Parks Legacy Society will be hosting a "Picnic in the Park" -Saturday June 22nd Noon to 3:00 @ 3954 Bryant Avenue South (former Park Supt House) and Theodore Wirth Home and Administration Building. Mayor Rybak and Dan Niziolek will present a proclamation to Mr. Wirth, recognizing the historic significance of this home. Free Tours of this Historic Home on behalf of the East Harriet Framstead Neighborhood Association will be given by Ted Wirth.
Background Information The Minneapolis Parks Legacy Society was founded by Joan Berthiaume, Linden Hills resident and Theodore J. Wirth (Ted), the grandson and namesake of the primary architect of the Minneapolis Park System. The mission is to educate the citizens of Minneapolis (especially the children) to better understand and learn their city and park history. As a part of that mission the sociey has recently accomplished the nomination of the Theodore Wirth Home and Administration Building for the National Register of Historic Places. This home played a significant role in the development of the City and its Park System. The house was built within a park to lure Wirth from Hartford Conneticut to Minneapolis, and it became his cherished home from 1910 to 1946. Withing this home are the offices where Wirth and his staff of engineers designed the rapidly expanding, award winning Mpls. Park System that our city grew within. This home has not been used as Superintendent's residence since 1995 but is still a part of the city's public park system. It is presently leased as office space to a statewide professional business association, the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association (MRPA). The MRPA promised the city to make a museum with public access 5 years ago. The lease agreement includes no public access. The MRPA is now asking to exercise their option to renew the existing lease for another 3-year term and add 2 additional 3-year options for a total of 9 years (current rent is $750.00 per month no utilities or taxes charged). This agreement allows the taxpayers to continue to subsidize the MRPA. The Minneapolis Parks Legacy Society is seeking approval of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to create the public museum as an education center, within the Theodore Wirth Home and Administration Building. We need your support!!! Please join us at Lyndale Farmstead Park for the celebration and add your signature to the scroll on the Mayor's proclamation! This is a rare opportunity to join your neighbors in supporting a privately funded program being donated to the City of Minneapolis!! ===== Mary Belfry (612) 822-6028 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
