R.T. wants to fund and promote multi-cultural arts festivals or events. The discussion centered around defining "multi-cultural," does it includes the gay and disability communities? What about klezmer music? The Mayor's aide used to be on the Commission so I think it will really have some impact on funding, although the Mayor admitted that the little money there was, will probably be even less now. [TB] Seems from here that the arts have done rather well. Do they really need City help? I'm hearing that the Walker has the 2nd largest endowment (after Museum of Modern Art) of any art museum in the country. The Art Institute certainly isn't hurting, how many small galleries around town? Theatres? Other than the minor detail of several of the building being owned by MCDA we certainly have many large and small theatre organizations that are extremely successful. Many have been around for an extended period of time. Music. What kind of music do you like? We can probably find it in one of our many venues. In an era when the City is telling us they need to cut budgets, arts promotion should go on the "nice to have" list. There are certainly some things that should be much higher on the priority list.
