In between reading e-mails about the Minneapolis DFL
working together to develop qualified candidates of
color, I got the following e-mail from Juan Lopez's
campaign manager!! (Remember, Juan Lopez is the
Democrat candidate for Hennepin County Sheriff.)

FOLLOWING IS HIS E-MAIL:
Nikki thanks for the information. By the way, Juan and
I went to a public policy forum with the Asian community
and the Republican Party was there represented by Norm
Coleman, Ron Eibensteiner, Mary Kiffmeyer and Tim
Pawlenty. They made a very good pitch to the Asian
community about joining the Republican Party and they
have hired an Hispanic Liaison and are trying to hire an
Asian liaison to help them recruit. They did a great
job, I just about joined them...well I am just kidding.
They are actively looking for people to run in several
districts that are up for election and said if the Asian
community had people, they would support them and make a
comparison to Senator Moua. They want one too! Where
is the DFL Party in this kind of outreach for peopel of
color?
By the way, we plan to be at all these conventions. We
know it is an uphill battle for a Latino Democratic
candidate but if not now when? If not Juan Lopez then
who? Not many people can even qualify to be sheriff
given the minimum qualification excluding all but police
people. Of course, we have very little representation
in all levels of govermment and elected offices, it
appears that you have to be Caucasian to serve. We need
to work to change this reality.
It would be nice to see the DFL rally behind this
candidate even if he has not worked 20 years in the DFL
insiders group. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
-Juan
