We folks at Project 504 are pleased to announce the upcoming June 26 premiere of "Badbaado," which loosely translates in Somali to "Survival." (I joke that it is the Somali version of "Survivor!"). The performance piece is a collaborative play of Pillsbury House Theater, Somali Youth Association, and Project 504. It involves professional actors and 8 Somali youth actors in a bi-lingual production around housing issues. Two of the youth will be trained so that they facilitate discussion with the audience (likely Somali elders) after the play.
It is our approach to the more traditional "forum" that typically uses a classroom style to educate about tenant rights and responsibilities. The play instead takes advantage of Somalis' oral culture and uses improvisation, humor, and wit to demonstrate the issues that many Somali tenants have in moving to Minneapolis and renting an apartment. It will be entertaining, educational, and informative. The first of four performances is on June 26, 2002, at the Pillsbury House Theater. Other performances will be at the Brian Coyle Center and at the Mixed Blood Theater later in the year. A workshop for Somali tenants follows on June 27, 2002, at the Brian Coyle Center, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. For those in neighborhoods or other organizations that are trying to reach out to the Somali community, I encourage you to contact us to discuss if you would like to attend one of the performances, particularly as it can be performed elsewhere (though at a price, as we are paying the actors and the youth).
