Keith may be overstating the case, and you personally
may have your particular problems, Carol, but the fact remains
that as a group gays have a lot of political clout in the
Minneapolis DFL. I say this not to condemn or fault anyone;
this is just my appreciation of the situation, formed by almost
two decades of watching and being involved in Minneapolis
politics. As a group, gays have more disposable income than
most other groups involved in Minneapolis politics, and that
income, along with their general tendency to support candidates endorsed by the
Stonewall DFL Caucus gives them
a lot of clout in DFL politics, possibly as much as the Labor
Caucus. I would think it would be very difficult for a
candidate not endorsed by either caucus to make much headway
in a primary or general election here in the city, unless the endorsed candidate was
either terminally lazy or stupid or had
some other severe political handicap.
Supporters of the Stonewall Caucus have noted the presence
of many prominent DFL politicians at events such as Pride;
would they have bothered doing so if Stonewall didn't have
significant clout? Time is money to a politician every bit as
much as it is to a businessman, and experienced politicians
like Jackie Cherryhomes and Sharon Sayles-Belton never waste
either one if they can avoid it.
So yes, Carol, your family may not have the same legal
recognition mine does, and if you were to set up housekeeping
in rural Mississippi or Wyoming (or some counties of Minnesota, for that matter) I
sure wouldn't want to be your
insurance agent, but here in Minneapolis you do in fact belong
to a politically powerful minority. As opposed to being a
Republican, of course, but we're working on that. ;)
