First, let me congratulate Carleton Crawford and Constance Nompelis
on their new offices, and on the good ink.

Second, let me note the retirement as City Republican chair of
Carleton's predecessor, Lee Eklund (to whom Doug Grow devoted a column in
March 2001). Lee and I served as each other's opposite numbers in our
respective parties for the past few years, and I enjoyed and appreciated
getting to know him (and Carleton, who served as the Republican deputy chair
in the last cycle) on the too-few occasions when we corresponded. From my
viewpoint, Lee was the best kind of party leader: committed to his party and
its cause, a thoughtful partisan and advocate when it comes to the
candidates and the issues, but a decent human being who respects other
viewpoints and who cares at least as much about being a good citizen and a
good neighbor as he does about being a good Republican.

I am singling Lee out because of his recent retirement as a party
officer (and I hope that praise from outside his party doesn't get him into
trouble inside it!). But I have also enjoyed working with other Republican
and Green leaders, including my neighbors Steve Sumner (Republican) and Cam
Gordon (Green), and I look forward to someday meeting the local Independence
party's leadership.
