Hi All!

I'll try to sneak in on this topic before DB puts the kibosh on it.

As a yute, in 1972, as I practiced for my driver test, my instructor, "Mad
Dog", the school librarian in his full-time profession, would have us drive
from Cretin HS to Ford Parkway and right over "The Ford Bridge" to Mpls in
order to hone our skills.

In those days, South Mpls was already ahead of it's time in "basketweaving"
side streets with STOP signs (unheard of in St Paul then). So it was good
practice to learn how to come to a compete stop, approaching traffic or not,
and knowing when it was "your turn" to proceed.

Hint: All ties goes to the car to on approaching from the right. Freudian,
almost.

We'd weave our way North thru the 40th-something residential avenues until
we got to Lake, where the men were sifted out from the boys (all-male HS,
sorry, girls). We'd hang a proper left turn near the Honda motorcycle place
and if the driver was good enough, we'd make it down to the "Old White
Castle." for lunch.

If Mad Dog was anxious, we'd stop at the "New White Castle"

After downing a few one-bites, we'd head East to the Promised Land,
signified by a beaten up old "Welcome to St Paul" sign about midway across
the good old creaky Lake Street Bridge.

Then we'd cruise the River Drive to Randolph, then back to old Cretin High.
Used a few side streets with what was then the BIG difference of St Paul v.
Mpls, ie, no STOP signs, and learned to slow and watch. Sadly, St Paul has
long since given up on driver intelligence and is as basketweaved as
everywhere else.

FASTFORWARD to 2002.

Hyperbole ahead, but not too far off. There are too many drivers, and too
few who know or respect the rules.

So a previous poster is correct. It's a jungle out there.

Just today, it seems there was a Road Rage incident with at least one
fatality and at least 3 other lives changed forever.

Miracle that this isn't a daily occurence, but just wait.

BTW. Lite, but vastly Expensive Rail is not the answer.

Can we get back to the basics of Driver Training and non-laughable
Licensure?

NAH.

Let's just put up more signs and do a few PSAs.

Sigh.

Cheers!
