Re: Yucca Mountain and the Twins

Re: Funding the Twins.

The concept that it is worth spending this money is
unconvincing with out providing actual data. Yes,
when there is a game more people are going to come to
downtown and spend money, but how much compared to how
much we spent? Also, are there other ways that we can
use those funds that would benefit the city more? I'd
guess there would be, especially because games only
happen every so often.

Additionally, I'd imagine that the city incurs a lot
of costs during games - all those police to take care
of stuff, additional trash clean up, etc. How does
that compare to the additional tax income that is
brought in during the game time.

If it is going to be so great for downtown businesses,
why haven't the downtown businesses gotten together
and ponied up the dough? If they don't want to, I
certainly don't.

It is sadly ironic to read about this and the cutting
of funds to our park system at the same time. Do we
really want to provide a space for 18 guys to play a
game while we degrading the spaces where all of our
citizens (and out of town guests) can enjoy
themselves? Personally, I'm a lot more interested in
the idea of watching a bunch of friends play a game of
ball than a bunch of millionares. Heck, I might join
my friends on the field - will the twins let me do
that?

Three differences:

- Any money coming from state or federal coffers is
coming from people who do not choose, use, or profit
from nuclear power. They shouldn't have to subsidize
the power costs for the rest of us.

- The difference is perceptual: "I pay my taxes and
some of it has been allocated to this project" versus
"holy cow, why are my power bills so high, is there a
cheaper option?"

- As a "taxpayer" I'm forced to pay an even split of
the costs. As a "consumer" I can choose to reduce the
amount of electricity I use if I want to lower my
financial burden.

Yep, you're right, we are going to pay for this one
way or another, but I don't like Xcel making money
while they are dumping the costs of what they did on
other people and I don't like hidden or obscured
costs. Let me (and all other consumers) know exactly
what this is truly costing so I can make educated
decisions. And if Xcel goes broke because they made a
poor decision, fine - hopefully whatever competitor
takes their place will do better.

There have been comments regarding that the Monticello
and Prairie Island plants are our cheapest power
option. Let's get all the costs up front and see if
it is or not. In any case, lets not subsidize Xcel's
profits!

As far as I'm concerned, Xcel has managed a bigger
scam here than Enron did and the people that are
getting screwed aren't the shareholders, but all
taxpayers.

Regarding current shipping of nuclear waste, from what
I could tell, new fuel rods are currently shipped from
either the east coast or the state of Washington and
have been for a long time. Low level radioactive
waste is also currently shipped to one of three sites.
Most hospital waste is pretty much the lowest level
of low level - class A. It is not nearly as deadly as
high level waste, but it can still kill you.

I don't like the Yucca mountain plan due to who's
paying the costs and that it obscures the actual costs
of using nuclear power. I also don't like it because
as far as I've heard, it was pretty much forced on
Nevada, and from what I could find, they don't even
use commercial nuclear power. I'm not smiling about
the shipping, but it is not a big issue for me since
we can't leave it where it is - it does have to move.
I don't particularly like the idea of proposed routes
from other states coming through the Twin Cities and
do think that if that can be verified our city and
state leadership should try and get that aspect of the
plan to change.
