To follow up on my earlier response to Mr. Avidor's question regarding bicycle lanes on the Nicollet Avenue bridge over Minnehaha Creek, the city's Public Works plan for the bridge improvement project indicates that there will be one 7-foot wide lane adjacent to each of the 11-foot wide traffic lanes on the bridge. These 7-footers are between the primary traffic lanes and the extra wide sidewalks. It seems to me that it wouldn't be necessary to ride one's bicycle on the sidewalk to cross the bridge, but as Ms. Mead correctly pointed out in her recent post, it would be perfectly legal to do so in this non-commercial area. Perhaps the question is one of semantics: do we want to designate these 7-foot wide lanes as bicycle lanes or as shoulders. I'm not sure it matters much as long as they are available and kept clear of snow in the winter.
