A quick clarification on Jim Graham's post:

The police budget cuts were all recommended by the chief based on our
direction to cut admin costs while keeping officers on the street.  So the
police budget cuts include admin dollars like rent, phones, fleet, etc and
natural attrition at all levels.  This should not have an effect on officers
on the street so it should not be seen as something that spells disaster for
any community, esp. those facing serious street level crimes.
    I was in Jim's neighborhood last week walking with the morning patrols
and the week before in Jordan. In both cases we will continue to keep a
presence on the street, as well as continue to work with the judges to
attack the serious problem of repeat offenders being put back onto the
street to repeat crimes they commit over and over again.
