I've been thinking about this issue as I worked. It seems that perhaps
the best way to handle the issue of police shootings would be to have an
independent investigation every time that this sort of incident occurs,
and that the independent investigators should not be police officers. The
simple fact is that police officers have common interests that do not
allow for them to judge these situations with impartiality. I might note
that there is a certain degree of constitutional logic to this as that the
constitution is built on a series of checks and balances. In this sense,
this independent investigating board could act to fill this role.
I might note that I am making no assumptions in what happened in the
most recent shooting. It would be nice to have a structure that operated
on the same logic. I wasn't thrilled with what was reported that CUAPB
was saying at the demonstration that they held. It after all made a
number of assumptions as well, but I can understand the frustrations that
those activists felt. This conversation has erupted repeatedly over the
last few years, and still there is no forum to effectively investigate and
check police power (potere) and no consequences were felt by the
department or the officers. Instead we are greeted with a knee-jerk
defence at any action by the department or officers. it's no wonder that
many activists immediately assume that the police are lying. I am not
making that assumption, but I want an investigation.
