This statement by Wizard Marks:
>The Kennedy's made their money bootlegging during prohibition.
is completely false.
It's one of those urban legends that seemingly can't be stopped, no matter
how many times it is corrected. (Probably because many people want to
believe it, for political reasons.)
For those interested in accuracy, the UrbanLegends site covers
this, in detail: http://www.urbanlegends.com/politics/kennedy_fortune.html
Here's just their summary on this:
>In short, Joe Sr. was a pretty ruthless and unethical businessman who made
>his pile with shady stock deals. He later tried to buy respectability in
>the political scene. He, however, never appears to have smuggled liquor,
>and, quite frankly, as he was making money hand over fist with the stock
>market (in many cases quite legally doing what the SEC was later set up to
>stop from happening) it seems unlikely that he would have bothered with
>something so patently illegal.
And really, it was the second generation of Kennedy's who made the
real money for the family, when they got into real estate in New York City,
Chicago, etc. By then Joe Sr. had been shipped off to London as US
Ambassador.
In any case, the Kennedy fortune never was anywhere near in the
same league as that of the Rockefellers, Carnigies, duPonts, etc. Or even
our own Bush-league non-elected President's family.
