Witches and warlocks are not the male and female forms of the words 
which describe a form of religous designation. A warlock is an 
untrustworthy person. It's Middle English and is first noted by Marlowe 
(spelled warloghe, [spelling was more individualized then]). Witch and 
wizard are the female and male forms denoting a specifically pagan rank. 
They both stem from the time before English and German split. From the 
verb form to wit (to know) apparently meaning a specific body on 
knowledge possibly to do with plants and their uses. Other derivitives: 
mother wit, witty, to have a wit. Kewl, huh?
